Gliders of Overlord: The One-Way Mission to Normandy | Restored WWII History

The Master Plan and Tactical Preparation In the tense hours before dawn on June 6, 1944, the fate of the free world rested on the shoulders of the airborne vanguard. The combined chiefs of staff recognized that a mere frontal assault would not be enough to crack Fortress Europe; the formidable Atlantic Wall had to be vaulted and dismantled from the rear. This official military record chronicles the monumental effort of the Ninth Troop Carrier Command, tasked with transporting the parachute and glider elements of the American 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions into hostile territory. The 101st was assigned to land thirty minutes prior to civil twilight to assist the initial assault and capture Carentan, while the 82nd dropped to the west to block enemy reserves from advancing. Before this historic D-Day operation could launch, critical lessons were extracted from earlier campaigns. The invasion of Sicily in July 1943 served as the first real test for these troop carrier units. It revealed severe operational flaws, including friendly fire incidents and widely scattered drop zones. Consequently, rapid technical and tactical innovations were implemented. Gliders were outfitted with the Griswold nose to protect pilots during rough landings and expedite unloading, while parachute arrestors were adopted to allow landings in highly restricted areas. The perilous "blitz landings" were completely discarded; instead, glider pilots were trained to maintain a slow, constant rate of descent to pinpointed locations. War Department Circular 113 became the ultimate blueprint, mandating that airborne troops must be employed in mass and guided by highly trained pathfinder teams dropped in advance. This meticulously restored and colorized footage offers an unprecedented look at the men who spent months preparing to break the Nazi grip on Europe.
