A House Built on a Slope: A Battle of Land, Land, and Air In Paju, Gyeonggi-do, is there a house that went beyond land and land battles to even fight a battle in the air? Situated firmly on a long, sloping plot, the house resembles a palace... but the twist lies not in the exterior, but in the interior? Homeowners Baek Seon-yeong and Jeong Chang-beom are a couple who have lived in apartments for nearly decades. To avoid the monotony of apartment living, they incorporated elevation changes that utilize the slope into the interior of this country house, which they built with great difficulty. Thanks to these elevation changes, natural spatial divisions were achieved, resulting in a unique living room space unlike anything seen before. While the house looks stylish and well-built on the outside, the homeowners reportedly went through all kinds of trials and tribulations here... The first trial they faced was a problem with the land. The land, purchased simply for its beautiful scenery, did not receive a building permit due to its steep slope. Ultimately, the only solution was to reduce the slope by purchasing a flat area in the middle of the U-shaped plot that had already been approved. It took a full five years to acquire all that land. Obtaining civil engineering and building permits alone took two years. Consequently, due to the prolonged permitting process, the plan to build the house—which had originally been left entirely to an architect—turned into a direct construction project led by his wife, Seon-yeong. Initially, the husband, Chang-beom, wanted to gift his wife, Seon-yeong, a nice house, but suddenly, the situation turned into one where she was the one gifting her husband. The water war, which felt like a battle, began with the dormer window in Seon-yeong's space. The dormer window leaked so much that the floor would get soaked whenever the rainy season began. Despite Seon-yeong's persistent protests, the construction company was busy only putting out the immediate fire with silicone. Having held back her anger as much as she could, Seon-yeong finally declared war on the construction company. The company promised to redo the work, and the roofing was successfully completed. However, this was not the end. Because the plumber mistakenly swapped the cold and hot water pipes during installation, hot water came out whenever the toilet was flushed. The problem was that since the pipes were buried within the concrete, fixing them could have been a major undertaking. However, the interior designer discovered the cause and resolved the issue by making only a minimal cut to replace the pipes. The final aerial battle began when they discovered that birds had built a nest in the hole they had drilled to install a doorbell. The electrician, who originally specialized in furniture, was moved by his wife Seon-yeong's attentive care for the birds and suggested that he handle the furniture. Through the collaboration of these two people, brought together by a chance encounter, a warm space resembling his wife Seon-yeong was born. Although this house had given them a full range of joys and sorrows, Seon-yeong poured her attention into the garden she had always desired, especially during difficult times. Now, Seon-yeong lives without a care, focusing solely on gardening, while her husband Chang-beom enjoys his hobbies.
