A short film looking at how the succession and colonisation of bare substrate by organisms such as lichens and mosses leads to the formation of soil. The evolution of soil took millions of years and was a process that involved, not only the physical weathering of bedrock, but also the addition of organic matter from the death and decomposition of plant matter.
