StarCraft: Retribution | Blizzard's Forgotten Third-Party Expansion
In 1998, Blizzard officially approved a StarCraft expansion that most people have never heard of. StarCraft: Retribution is the second forgotten expansion in both Blizzard and StarCraft history. But why was it forgotten, and how does it compare to the first add-on, StarCraft: Insurrection? In this video, we’ll explore both of those questions and more, including how the game came into existence, what the campaign is like, and whether it’s worth your time to play today. We’ll also walk through the story, missions, map design, and other key moments that make Retribution another strange entry in the StarCraft universe. Despite both the original StarCraft and Brood War being staples of my early gaming experience, I had never heard of Retribution until recently. That surprised me, given that it’s an add-on that was fully authorized by Blizzard. Because of this—and due to the limited information surrounding it online—I decided to research everything I could. Once again, that led me to some fascinating places, including advertisements in late-1990s computer gaming magazines, online review articles from 1999 and 2000, and another Blizzard lore panel where Retribution’s canon status was discussed. Whether you played this authorized add-on when it originally released or you’re hearing about it for the first time, I hope you enjoy your time here as we journey through this bizarre and largely unknown piece of gaming history.
