Federal Volunteer Service – is it a good way to start your career? Many young people wonder what to do after school. Start an apprenticeship, go straight to university, or perhaps just travel for a year? Last year, around 40,000 people decided to complete the Federal Volunteer Service. The opportunities are diverse: you can try your hand at social, cultural, or environmental work. Leon also opted for the Federal Volunteer Service. He is 19 and has been working for about four months in an inclusive kindergarten in Düsseldorf. He will stay there for a full year and will also care for children with disabilities. His day starts at 8 a.m. and ends at 4:30 p.m. He has breakfast with the children, plays with them afterward, takes them to the gym for some exercise at lunchtime, and helps out wherever needed. At first, he was often exhausted after his workday. For him, the Federal Volunteer Service is a good opportunity to try things out, as he's not yet sure what career path he wants to pursue. Current figures show that despite the wide range of opportunities available, one in three volunteers drops out of the Federal Volunteer Service. This doesn't surprise Leon. He feels comfortable at his placement, but he's also heard from many volunteers who felt overwhelmed because they weren't adequately prepared and couldn't cope with the situation, for example, in a nursing home or hospice. Leon would like to see better information provided about the Federal Volunteer Service. For instance, former volunteers could be invited to career information days to share their experiences. He himself would like to do that later on. Leon found his placement through the "Voluntary Social Services in the Archdiocese of Cologne." The application process was quick and easy. On average, a volunteer earns 390 euros. If the salary were increased, Leon believes more people might consider the Federal Volunteer Service. Leon is against making the Federal Volunteer Service a mandatory year again, as some politicians are demanding. He believes this wouldn't improve the quality of the work. After all, especially in the social sector, one should always be fully committed to the cause.
