What are we talking about when we talk about the West? Today, with the war in Ukraine, a purely geopolitical concept of the West seems to be returning to prominence, where Western Europe and the United States, defenders of democracy and freedom, oppose the "barbarism" of the East, Russia, and China. But hasn't it always been this way, and are we sure that this idea of the West, this alliance of values, economics, and military technology, will last forever? Since the Persian Wars, East and West have been brothers and sisters, friends and enemies, dream and nightmare. "East is East, West is West: and no one can ever reconcile them," declared Rudyard Kipling at the time of the founding of the British Empire in India. On the basis of the many misunderstandings generated by their confrontation, ideological "isms" have also emerged, as fierce as they are ambiguous: Orientalism and Occidentalism, wrapped in the dilation of their contradictions. Oswald Spengler had already decreed the "decline of the West"; But immediately, behind Spengler's European West, another began to emerge, the American West, which, after having subjugated the Pacific, was preparing to swallow the Atlantic as well: a Leviathan of land and sea according to Carl Schmitt, opposed to Behemoth, a compact, all-terrain Orient. Meanwhile, elsewhere, from Japan to China and India, other Wests were emerging, founded on different presuppositions from the Euro-American one and bearers of other "modernities." With the war in Ukraine, Russia was definitively shifted toward Asia and excluded from its Christian and European dimension. But does this definition of the West make sense, or is it merely useful today for instrumental reasons?
