A forensic report revealed that soldier Mateus Rodrigues, killed during a police operation in Sorocaba, in the interior of São Paulo, was hit by a gunshot fired by a police officer. The projectile removed from the officer's head was of a caliber exclusive to the Military Police. The incident occurred in the early morning of April 11th. During the operation, four criminals broke into a pharmacy. During the escape, there was an exchange of gunfire with the police, and three suspects died inside the car. Security camera footage showed the moment Mateus was hit in the back of the neck and fell to the ground. Initially, it was believed that the shot that killed the officer had come from the criminals. However, a forensic report indicated that the shot that killed the soldier came from a weapon compatible with that of the police. The internal affairs department has suspended the 11 police officers involved in the operation. Their testimonies presented contradictions that were challenged by the evidence gathered. There is suspicion that one of the police officers crouched down near the bodies of the criminals to tamper with the crime scene and plant a weapon in the hands of the dead assailant to simulate a legitimate confrontation. The hypothesis of friendly fire has begun to be considered by experts.
