Long before Chihuahuas became couch pets, their ancestors – the Techichi – were revered by the Aztecs as sacred guardians capable of guiding human souls through the treacherous underworld of Mictlán. In this drawing, I brought that myth to life by placing this mythical canine beneath giant, surreal mushrooms, which ancient shamans used as portals to the spirit realm. Every line was drawn using dip pens and black ink, focusing on the heavy cross-hatching of the forest floor versus the delicate fur of the dog.
