World Food Safety Day 2024

Dr Francesco Branca, Director of the Department of Nutrition and Food Safety at the World Health Organization, reflects on the most important key messages and calls to action for World Food Safety Day 2024 with the theme of Food safety: prepare for the unexpected. Every day, on average 1.6M people become sick due to contaminated food. The aim of this day, established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2018, is to raise awareness of the importance of food safety and to inspire action. The campaign is jointly facilitated by WHO and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). This year also marks the 20th anniversary of INFOSAN – a global network of national food safety authorities jointly established by WHO and FAO in 2004.
