Ostrich Ferns! Matteucia struthiopteris || Fern Friday Season 2
#FernFriday This week it's all about how to grow the Ostrich fern! Matteucia struthiopteris is a U.S and Canada native fern which grows anywhere from 1 to 5 feet tall. A lot of how how large they grow is relative to their climate. More mild climates with loamy soil and moderate to heavy precipitation will produce the taller ferns. This is in my opinion the best fern to grow in the landscape for people who want texture but not the fuss of typical ferns. Ostritch ferns are such an easy to grow fern because they are cold hardy, they are a fern for sun ( in more mild climates) and they grow quickly giving a strong impact to the garden. No matter the climate, once they send up their fertile fronds the plants start looking kind of shabby but it is worth it since they look so lush and vibrant for so many months prior. To fertilize these ferns I suggest amending the soil in mid spring with rich organic matter such as humus, worm casting, epsoma plant tone etc. ... anything that will enrich the soil. If it is desired to use a liquid fertilizer for ferns then be sure to dilute that fertilizer by 50% to avoid any root burn. The main reason the ostritch fern is my favorite fern is due to the amount of light they can take. As long as temperatures aren't scorching hot (+90F) then these are ferns for part to full sun. Of course they need lots of watering and well drained soil the more sun they get but their are not any other ferns for my area that grow well with much sun on them. Ideally the ferns need bright morning sun and filtered afternoon shade, but mine have been growing for several years in morning and afternoon sun and looking great!... until it gets really hot outside, then they start to get shabby. The light green foliage would pair wonderfully with a rainbow of impatiens, or to keep things more elegant in the garden, just some white impatiens. I think the Ostritch fern is the best fern for growing in more rough climates or gardens where other ferns fail. ⬇️⭐⭐⭐⬇️Social Media⬇️⭐⭐⭐⬇️ 🍃Stay up to date with daily life and activities through messaging and pictures and don't forget to subscribe and hit the notification bell!
