Best Chipmunk Trap I've Ever Built, better than buckets with water.

IF you MUST trap chipmunks, this is the only system I would use. A good friend of mine is using bucket traps with water in them. So, I am gifting this system to him so he can just take them out clean. If you're going to kill something anyway, I highly recommend a quick-system that won't leave them suffering. While the idea of a water bucket trap might seem simple, a well-designed kill trap, such as a rat-sized snap trap, offers several advantages in terms of minimizing suffering compared to drowning. Instantaneous Death vs. Prolonged Suffering: The primary argument for using a properly set kill trap is that it aims for a rapid and, ideally, instantaneous death. A well-designed snap trap is intended to deliver a forceful blow that causes immediate incapacitation and death, typically by crushing the neck or skull. In contrast, drowning can be a protracted and highly distressing experience. Animals trapped in a bucket of water will experience panic, struggle for breath, and suffer from oxygen deprivation over an extended period before succumbing. This prolonged suffering makes drowning a less humane method. Reliability of Kill Traps: Modern rat snap traps are designed for efficiency and a high success rate when properly baited and placed. When the trap triggers, the mechanism is powerful enough to ensure a quick kill for a small animal like a chipmunk. The effectiveness of a drowning trap can be more variable, as a chipmunk might struggle for a significant amount of time, prolonging its suffering. It's important to note that any method of lethal control should be implemented with care and consideration. This includes: Proper Trap Placement: Traps should be placed in locations where chipmunk activity is evident, such as near burrows or along their travel paths. To prevent harm to non-target animals (like pets or beneficial wildlife), traps should be placed in concealed locations, under inverted boxes with small entry holes, or within bait stations designed to only allow access to rodents. While the idea of trapping a chipmunk in a water bucket might seem like a simple solution, the extended suffering involved makes it a less humane option than a well-placed and effective kill trap, such as a rat-sized snap trap, when lethal control is deemed necessary. The goal, in such cases, should be to achieve the quickest and least painful outcome possible for the animal.
