Starting out as a teenager disc jockey, he moved to Nashville in 1958 with childhood friend Johnny Paycheck and built a stellar career as a harmony vocalist and bass player for artists like Faron Young, George Jones, and Ray Price. Transitioning to solo work in 1963, he scored a hit with “A Stranger Was Here” and later embraced the outlaw country scene in the 1970s, most notably with his Top‑40 duet “Lily Dale” alongside Willie Nelson .
