Clean lines, reliable technology, and a timeless design make it a popular classic car to this day. In this video, we introduce you to Dirk's red Audi 80 with 75 hp. We talk about: The model history of the Audi 80 B2 Technology, engine variants, and driving impressions The availability of spare parts and everyday usability And, of course, the personal story behind this classic Whether as an everyday car or a collector's item, the Audi 80 B2 shows why it shaped an entire era and continues to delight many fans today. The Audi 80 B2 – Clean Lines, Solid Technology From 1978 to 1986, Audi built the second generation of the Audi 80, the B2. The mid-range car impressed with its sober design, solid technology, and a wide range of engines. With its bold appearance, it replaced the first generation, the B1, in 1978. The design was timeless and modern, and the technology was robust and diverse. The engine lineup ranged from 55 to 136 hp – from the economical four-cylinder to the powerful five-cylinder. Over 1.6 million vehicles were produced during this production period – a milestone for Audi on its way to the mid-size class. Model Year 1984 The vehicle shown here is an Audi 80 Type B2, built in late 1983, model year 1984 – the last series before the facelift. After the company holidays in the summer of 1984, Audi switched to the revised version. This example has been largely preserved in its original condition. Only minor damage to the doors, wheel arches, and bumper was repaired over time, as was the braking system. Notable features include the modernized dashboard with new speaker covers and galvanized sheet metal in the wheel arches. The bumper edge strips on the doors, which were found on previous models, were already eliminated. Another special feature is the Tornado Red paint finish, whereas previous models were predominantly offered in Mars Red. The dashboard of this car is also crack-free – a detail that has become rare in many vehicles of this generation. Driving Experience of the 1980s Typical of vehicles of this era is the excellent all-round visibility through the large glass surfaces. The driving experience is purist: power steering and ABS are missing, yet the car handles taut, direct, and very honestly. The controls are simple: switches for lights, fog lights, rear fog lights, rear window heating, and hazard warning lights. There is also a three-stage ventilation system, temperature control, and flap control. Several additional instruments were retrofitted, and a contemporary radio from 1988 with RDS function is installed, complemented by a modern Bluetooth interface. Technology – Clear and Robust Under the hood sits the EA827 engine, a standard unit of the VW Group. The alternator sits at the top, next to it the mechanical fuel pump and water pump, and below it the timing belt, distributor, and carburetor. The design is clear, robust, and easily accessible. Wear parts such as brakes and hoses are still readily available today. The only difficulty is with specific body parts – this is where interest groups and clubs provide valuable support. A piece of automotive history The Audi 80 B2 exemplifies automobile construction in the 1980s. Its clean lines, simple operation, solid technology, and a driving experience that many enthusiasts still appreciate today. With its high production numbers, the variety of variants, and its reliability, it is a defining model in Audi history and remains a symbol of the brand's rise into the mid-range segment.
