Preston Bus Station Car Park Tithebarn St, Preston PR1 1YT Constructed: 1968–69 / Opened 1969 Spaces: 1,100 Visited: August 2025 Preston Bus Station Car Park was constructed between 1968 and 1969 as part of the vast new Central Bus Station complex, opening in 1969. Designed by Keith Ingham and Charles Wilson of Building Design Partnership with E. H. Stazicker, engineered by Ove Arup & Partners, and built by John Laing, it remains one of the most ambitious surviving examples of British post-war transport architecture. Integrated above the bus station itself, the car park belongs to a moment when towns and cities were being reshaped around movement, infrastructure, and the private car. Vehicular access is handled by curved concrete ramps at the north and south ends of the building, while the projecting concrete decks and balustrades give the structure its distinctive sculptural profile. Historic England notes the building’s exceptional special interest, and the bus station and car park were granted Grade II listed status in September 2013.
