Gourd & Island Lakes-Indian Peaks Wilderness-Colorado-Backpacking-Three Days

On July 14-16, 2024 we backpacked to Gourd and Island Lakes in the Indian Peaks Wilderness of Colorado. We spent three days and two nights in this beautiful area of northern Colorado. We set up camp at Gourd Lake. On the second day we hiked up to Island Lake. There is only a faint social trail up to Island Lake. Once you pass the first pond head to the left and then hike up near the cliff. This is where the social trail ends. The rock is loose so watch your footing. There are more gully's that you will have to navigate through hiking up before you top out and descend down to Island Lake. You will need GPS and great route finding skills to make it to Island Lake. From Gourd Lake to Island Lake was 1.5 miles and 700 feet of elevation gain. We have studied this route for a year. Best to have a hiking partner along with you. We absolutely loved this trip. 20.4 miles and 3465 feet of total elevation gain. Stats include another hike that we couldn't complete due to weather. It's easy to get permits for Gourd Lake but there are only a few campsites. One on the peninsula, one on the south shore, one on the east shore and two on the north shore.
