Veterinarians Without Borders: 20 Years of One Health Impact

As the sun rises in rural Kenya, a farmer leans into the familiar rhythm of milking her cows. In South Sudan, a herder guides his cattle to the riverbank for their first drink of the day. In Canada’s Arctic, a woman harnesses her dogs, their breath mingling with hers in the bitterly cold morning air. Around the world, in places where animals are the heartbeat of life, we stand alongside farmers and families. Helping them protect their herds, their homes, and the land they depend on. This is the heart of One Health: understanding that the well-being of animals, people, and the planet are deeply connected. Everywhere we work, change begins with partnerships—interweaving education, accessible veterinary care, local knowledge, and global expertise. In the field, volunteer veterinarians work shoulder-to-shoulder with community animal health workers, women leaders, and farmers—sharing skills, finding solutions, and building systems that last. Together, we strengthen animal health, improve food security, and open doors—especially for women—to lead and to thrive. Since 2005, we’ve protected herds from disease, brought veterinary care to places far off the map, trained local leaders, and stood with partners through disaster and recovery. We now reach more than 180,000 animals and one million people every year. In more than a dozen countries, our work means families with steady income, children with nourishing food, and communities prepared for whatever comes next. The result: healthy animals, empowered women, and resilient livelihoods across Africa, Asia, North America, and Europe. Thank you for being part of our story.
