Daimler: GenH2 Flüssig-Wasserstoff-Lkw! Volker Hasenberg (Daimler Truck) | Geladen Podcast
Every week, there are dozens of success stories about battery-electric and hydrogen-powered trucks, which are usually delivered to the first test customers with great fanfare. Online, these news stories are usually accompanied by heated discussions and commentary about fundamental electrochemistry (energy densities, efficiency, and operating costs): Battery fans see the advantages of battery technology in terms of efficiency, lower costs, and longevity. Hydrogen fans, on the other hand, cite faster refueling times and the long ranges of the first H2 prototypes. The bottom line is that the major German truck manufacturers are currently (still?) pursuing a dual strategy: All are developing both battery and hydrogen drives for their trucks. Opinions differ on the question of whether to use liquid or gaseous hydrogen. In today's podcast episode, we look at #Daimler Truck AG: With the #GenH2 truck, the company is developing its first liquefied natural gas truck, which is designed to particularly appeal to customers with its flexible route planning. Our guest today is Volker Hasenberg, Manager International Hydrogen Strategy for Daimler Truck. According to Hasenberg, the GenH2 truck has a range of over 1,000 km on a single tank of fuel. The two liquefied natural gas tanks are mounted where diesel tanks are traditionally located today. Daimler Truck has now further developed the tank architecture, focusing particularly on #safety, heat resistance, and vacuum insulation. A major challenge for H2 trucks, however, is the lack of a liquid hydrogen filling station network, as well as the price and availability of green hydrogen. In the long term, the total cost of ownership (#TCO) should be worthwhile for the customer in terms of both purchase and operation. Hasenberg estimates this won't be realistic until the end of the 2020s. Podcast episode with Prof. Markus Hölzle about #fuelcells: https://geladen.podigee.io/12-wassers...
