"Where exactly did the giving of the Torah take place? According to the traditional reading of the stories of the Torah, this event and the making of the covenant between God and Israel took place at Mount Sinai. However, a careful reading of the stories of revelation to the people of Israel in the Torah opens up a window for us to the different layers of the text, which reveal new and fascinating information about these stories. In this series, we will seek to distinguish between ancient biblical poetry and biblical prose – which is later. The poetic descriptions in the Bible tell, on the one hand, of God coming from a volcanic region called Sinai and revealing himself without saying anything; and on the other hand, of the event in which God spoke explicitly to the Israelites and gave them the commandments, near the spring of ""the waters of strife"". However, as we will see in this series, it was the biblical narrator who tied the service together and copied the story of the giving of the Torah from the spring of ""the waters of strife"" to Mount Sinai. During the series, we will discuss the different poetic layers in the Bible in contrast to the narrative layer in the Book of Exodus And we will seek to find out why the biblical narrator sought to unite the events and determine their location on Mount Horeb - Sinai? At the same time, we will discuss the important role of the figure of Moses in shaping the story in its familiar version. Prof. Israel Knohl served as a professor in the Yehezkel Kaufman Chair of Biblical Studies at the Hebrew University and is a senior research fellow at the Shalom Hartman Institute. His book "From the Spring to the Mountain" was recently published by Carmel Publishing.
