SSL Big Six: maxed out FX routing (dub mixing example. feat Muddyloop)
It's compact and can seem fairly limited compared to a lot of mixers for home/project studios - but it turns out there's still a lot you can do with the SSL Big Six with some clever routing. In this video, I've got all the following hardware FX hooked up to the B6 at the same time utilising all 4 mono inserts, both stereo cues, B Bus, and main insert: 1. Roland Chorus Echo 2. SVA 'Prince Fatty' spring reverb 3. Ensoniq DP4 Phaser (DP4 ch 1) 4. Ensoniq DP4 Flanger (DP4 ch 2) 5. Ensoniq DP4 Delay/Rev (DP4 Ch 3-4) 5. Audio Merge KTBK filter 6. Culture Vulture distortion 7. EL8 Distressor compressor 8. SSL Fusion + SVA TG limiter Background: Having used the Big Six mainly for analogue summing (see link below for previous video on this) - I wanted to test out its capabilities as more of a performance mixer, maxing out the FX routing capabilities. When my friends Muddyloop asked me to remix some of the tracks on their latest album (the amazing 'Higher than Heaven, Deeper than Hell') - to release under my 'Dub Siren' moniker - it was the perfect opportunity to put the mixer to the test with some live dub-style mixing, and it was very satisfying maxing out the FX routing - hope it helps you get the most out of your Big Six. If you've got more tips on routing possibilities, please share in the comments.
