ELM – Richie Beirach | Xtra Rep Jazz Quartet

"Elm": Xtra Rep performs Richie Beirach's celebrated composition with a solo guitar intro arrangement, recorded live at IMEP, 12 June 2026. "Elm" is the title track of Richie Beirach's landmark 1979 ECM trio album with George Mraz and Jack DeJohnette, widely regarded as one of the finest modern piano-trio records ever made. Beirach dedicated the piece to the Polish jazz violinist Zbigniew Seifert. One of his best-loved tunes, it has entered the standard jazz repertoire. For our arrangement I got to reimagine the intro as a solo guitar passage, which was a real joy: it's such a pianistic tune that translating those voicings and lines to the guitar was a fascinating puzzle to solve. Hope it opens the tune up to more guitarists. Xtra Rep started as a WhatsApp group where we organized extra repertoire to play on the side, turns out the "extra" stuff was too good not to record. Richie Beirach passed away in 2026. His compositions and his singular harmonic voice have touched countless musicians and listeners, and playing his music is our small way of saying thank you. This one's for him. In memory of Richie Beirach (1947 to 2026).
