Typically, woodworkers will do their best to mitigate wood movement and prevent bending, cupping, or twisting. However, sometimes we need curved pieces that we simply can't or shouldn't cut from a longer piece. There are two very popular methods for bending wood: lamination bending and steam bending. Lamination bending involves cutting a sheet of wood into thin strips and gluing each layer of strips together to form a curved shape. This process is very predictable and can be done with any type of wood. You can watch the video I made about it here: • Bent Lamination Steam bending is a completely different method. This process uses steam to transfer heat directly to the wood fibers, allowing them to become malleable for a period of time. This gives us enough time to hold the workpiece to the bending die and achieve the new shape. A good analogy is a curly head. With the right amount of moisture and heat, straight hair can become curled, and conversely, curly hair can become straight. The same thing happens with wood. But because not all species are created equal, not all can be used in the bending process. Commonly used wood species for bending are Ash, Beech, Birch, Walnut, Red Oak, and White Oak. Additionally, kiln-dried wood is much more difficult to bend due to the hardening of the lignin caused by the kiln-drying process. Because this process was completely new to me, I decided to take the plunge without doing much research, and essentially failed to achieve good bending. But these failures helped solidify my knowledge on the subject, which is based on experience rather than simply taking other people's word for it. For this project, I read many articles, watched many videos, and read two books on the subject, one of which I highly recommend: Wood Bending Made Easy by Lon Schleining: https://amzn.to/31ugzcS While I’m nowhere near an expert on steam bending, I feel like I’ve gained a better understanding of what it takes to successfully bend wood. I also learned that I prefer the predictability of bent lamination. But learning both bending techniques will allow me more options for my future projects. Here’s a summary of my personal findings. Keep in mind that this method requires more research and testing: • Soaking doesn’t seem to be necessary for air-dried wood • Adding more steaming time than the literature recommends • Compression straps seem to be very necessary. And I say seem because I know some woodworkers don’t use them when bending • Give the piece plenty of time to dry in a warm area • Bending kiln dried lumber is a little more work than air dried and can be used for those occasional bends SUBSCRIBE TO OUR CHANNEL! http://www.youtube.com/subscription_c...
