Joan Tower (Piano Concerto)
Composed in 1985, this piano concerto by Joan Tower is a powerhouse and a dream all wrapped up in one movement. The composer wrote the piece with portions of Beethoven sonatas in mind. Those fragments hover in and out during the three cadenzas. It's a truly accessible yet challenging piece of music worthy of repeated hearings. Performed by Ursula Oppens (piano) and the Louisville Orchestra with Max Bragado-Darman conducting Paintings by Nancy Eckels
