This time, the target is the Ito, one of Japan's three most monstrous fish. The challenger is living legend Koichi Motonami, who has been fishing for large fish in mainstream rivers for nearly 40 years. His goal remains the same: a 150cm-class fish. [The setting is a 4-night, 5-day fishing trip along the rivers of northern Hokkaido in late autumn.] Following Motonami's belief that the best chance to encounter large fish is just before the river freezes over, he pursues the vitality of the river basin and the signs of individual fish, meticulously tracking the process leading up to the record. The 48cm fish he caught early on indicates the health of the river. But his sights lie beyond that. Why 150cm? Motonami combed ancient documents and, based on the existence of giant specimens recorded in the past, logically determined the "maximum size he could aim for." Matsuura Takeshiro wrote about a huchen taimen measuring "8-9 shaku (approximately 2.4-2.7m)." Legend, records, and on-site experience further strengthen his challenge.
