In a little over 24 hours, a storm named Mekkhala exploded over the warm water of the Philippine Sea, its winds climbing by nearly 60 miles an hour until it became the strongest June typhoon the western Pacific has seen in 22 years. It reached Category 4 equivalence and was still forecast to climb toward super typhoon strength, even as it began to curve north — away from the Philippines and toward Okinawa and the islands of southern Japan, with the closest approach expected around June 25th and 26th. But the storm itself is only half the story. The last time the Pacific built a June typhoon this strong, it was the opening act of one of the most violent typhoon seasons ever recorded, and this one is forming over an ocean that has been warming for months. So if the basin is already manufacturing a monster a full season early, what exactly is the rest of this season about to bring? 🔔 Subscribe to The Sky Lab for space weather, solar activity, and the stories behind the storms. 💬 Drop a comment — where are you watching from, and have you ever ridden out a typhoon or hurricane firsthand? 📢 Share this video to help us grow this community. — ⚠️ DISCLAIMER: This video is for educational and informational purposes.
