Holiday in Portugal, Part 5

This day we went to the city Beja, a city and municipality in the district of the same name. A little history of the city: in the year 713 the city was conquered by the Omayads. In 1150 the city came to the Almohad dynasty from Morocco. Fernão Gonçalves and his troops stormed Beja in 1162 on behalf of Alfonso I of portugal, in 1175 the city was again conquered by the Almohads, but fell definitively into the hands of the Portuguese in 1232. The keep (Torre de Menagem) is an important monumental part of the symbol of the city. The keep has tilts and a bolcony around the tower. Inside there are three floos, ogival doors and machined vaults. The top can be reached via a staircase with 183 steps and above you have one of the best views over the city and the region. The castle of Beja is worth seeing, but also the city centre, with small Streets and squares with shops. Later, in the afternoon, we went to the Parque Fluvial de Cinco reis, also known as Praia Fluvial dos Cinco Reis, an award-winning "oasis" in the Alentejo region, located about 7km from the city. It an sandy beach, nautical activities center and a lakeside restaurant.
