Redear Fishing: Absolute Shellcracker Beatdown on Kentucky Lake

This trip on Kentucky Lake turned into an absolute shellcracker beatdown. I got on a school of Redear Sunfish (shellcrackers) shallow on a mud flat and it was game on. These fish were pushed up so shallow I had to keep the boat out in the main creek channel just to avoid running aground. I originally found them using side imaging and once I got lined up, it didn’t take long to realize they were stacked up. The males were dark, colored up, and fighting hard — and we were putting a hurting on them. For this setup I was using a B’n’M Poles John Godwin Crappie Cast rod paired with a Daiwa Revros reel spooled with 2 lb test from Trout Magnet. The bait that got it done was an old school Crappie Magnet Popeye Jig, sometimes tipped with a red worm to seal the deal. When you find redear like this during the spawn, it can turn into nonstop action — and this was one of those days.
