Bei einem Großangriff 1943 auf Rheydt wurden 90 Prozent der Industrieanlagen und 80 Prozent der Wohngebäude zerstört. Ab 1947 begann der schnelle Wiederaufbau. 1975 wurde die kommunale Neugliederung durchgeführt. Rheydt wird zum Stadtteil von Mönchengladbach. Seit der kommunalen Neugliederung vom 1. Januar 1975 ist die vormals selbständige Stadt Rheydt Teil der kreisfreien Stadt Mönchengladbach. Mönchengladbach ist heute wirtschaftliches Oberzentrum und gleichzeitig größte Stadt am linken Niederrhein. Hervorzuheben ist die räumliche Nähe und damit auch funktionale Konkurrenz zu Düsseldorf (ca. 35 km östlich), Köln (ca. 50 km südöstlich) sowie zur niederländischen Grenze (ca. 30 km westlich) mit den Städten Venlo und Roermond. Die Besonderheit der Stadt Mönchengladbach liegt in ihrer Bipolarität mit den beiden Zentren Mönchengladbach und Rheydt, wobei Mönchengladbach das Hauptzentrum darstellt und Rheydt eher regionale Bedeutung zukommt. Die Existenz paralleler Angebote beziehungsweise zentraler städtischer Institutionen ist in der Gesamtstadt deutlich erkennbar. Zudem liegen die beiden Innenstädte nur ca. 4 km voneinander entfernt. Die Bevölkerungsschwerpunkte finden sich dementsprechend in den Bezirken Stadtmitte (58.000 Einwohner) und Rheydt-Mitte (41.000 Einwohner). Neben dem gesamtstädtischen Hauptzentrum Mönchengladbach kommt der Innenstadt von Rheydt mit ihren knapp 13.000 Einwohnern eine bedeutende Stellung zu. Sie besitzt eine „Stellvertreter“- Funktion für die südlichen Stadtteile, konzentrieren sich doch hier viele der für Rheydt sowie die Gesamtstadt wichtigen Einrichtungen und Angebote. Zu nennen sind dabei Verwaltungseinrichtungen wie das Technische Rathaus, Kultureinrichtungen wie das Theater sowie eine Konzentration von Gastronomie und Einzelhandel.
