Notre-Dame de Chartres

Cathedral Charters (Notre-Dame de Chartres) was mostly constructed between 1194 and 1250, after the previous bulding ( built on the ruins of an ancient Celtic temple, and later replaced by a Romanesque temple) was destroyed by fire in 1194. It is famous for its stain glass windows. During World War II, the cathedral was spared by an American Army officer, Colonel Welborn Barton Griffith, Jr. who challenged the order to destroy it. Significant portion of about 150 windows was saved with its original medieval paintings. Chartreská katedrála (Notre-Dame de Chartres) byla z větší části postavena v letech 1194 - 1250 poté, co předchozí budovu v románském slohu zničil oheň. Katedrála je známá zejména pro své vitráže, ze sto padesáti oken je značná část původní. Během druhé světové války byla katedrála významně poškozena. Mohlo být i hůř, katedrálu, údajnou německou pozorovatelnu, vlastně zachránil americký plukovník Welborn Barton Griffith, Jr. který odmítl uposlechnout rozkaz a dokázal, že uvnitř žádní Němci nejsou.
