What was sold to us as flexibility and freedom is often a way to get around labor protections such as minimum wage, health benefits, and predictable schedules. As full time work becomes harder to find these days, more people turn to the gig economy to make ends meet, but gig work can be unstable. Pay fluctuates wildly, expectations change and when your boss is an algorithm or app, you are left unprotected, and your employer is accountable to nobody. This is a big contributor to the rise of what can be known as Technofeudalism, where we work for platforms we hold no ownership in and play by their rules.
