The Lorraine 120 Alby is a French Tier VIII anti-tank gun, adhering to traditional principles: low profile, good mobility, good frontal armor, and carrying a 120 mm automatic-loading gun. Its highlight is the mobile superstructure of the hull and gun, allowing the weapon to rotate 30° to each side without rotating the entire hull. A cabin-style self-propelled gun, it packed powerful firepower and high protection into the smallest possible size: 45 tons. The main goal was to expand the gun's rotation angle to eliminate hull rotation, leading to a completely new combat compartment design. Plans were made to install 105 mm or 120 mm rifled guns, and even recoil-resistance devices for the rear caliber. However, prototypes revealed a number of drawbacks: poor mobility, extremely high fuel consumption. Installing the large gun was difficult due to the barrel extending over 4 meters, hindering traversing rough terrain and requiring high driver concentration. The heavy weight and large 120 mm cannon overloaded the front of the vehicle, causing the front load-bearing components to wear out quickly.
