I spoke with Patricia Velásquez, founder of the Wayuu Taya Foundation, about the humanitarian response already being organized to support the communities affected by the earthquake in Venezuela. For 25 years, Wayuu Taya has worked continuously in the country, supporting vulnerable communities with programs in health, education, water, food security, and community development. Today, in response to this emergency, they immediately activated an aid network with specialized international organizations. Their team is already in Venezuela working with CORE, a U.S. organization specializing in disaster response, to assess the most urgent needs and coordinate initial assistance efforts. Allies such as ACCESO, from Colombia, have also joined the effort, providing food support; Direct Relief, from the United States, is contributing medicines, supplies, and medical equipment; and Food For The Poor is providing medicines, food, and humanitarian aid. Furthermore, they are coordinating the mobilization of drinking water, food, medicine, hygiene kits, materials for temporary shelters, and heavy machinery for debris removal—a key task in the search, rescue, and recovery efforts. Most importantly, this aid is not intended solely for the immediate emergency. The Wayuu Taya Foundation also seeks to support the recovery process so that families can rebuild their lives with dignity, hope, and sustained support. Amidst so much suffering, many Venezuelans and allies are working to rebuild the country. Organized solidarity can make an enormous difference. Share this information.
