RF Envelope Tracking Tutorial | Improving RF Power Amplifier Efficiency
Tutorial providing the key insights into RF amplifier Envelope Tracking which is being used increasingly for everything from 4G smartphones to base stations and broadcast transmitters. Envelope tracking is an RF power amplifier technology that enables the efficiency of amplifier to be improved. Envelope tracking, ET works by supplying the correct voltage to the power amplifier to provide the optimum efficiency at any given time. As RF signal waveforms have a high peak to average power ratio, it is impossible to gain a high level of efficiency using traditional techniques. Doherty amplifiers and now envelope tracking provide an effective solution to the problem. Envelope tracking, ET, is now used in many smartphones where battery life isa key issue. By using envelope tracking it is possible for the final power amplifier to provide a high level of efficiency and consume less power so that the battery life is extended for a given level of operation.
