Ремонт и перетяжка подлокотника SY Rexton W
Hello everyone! I've finally gotten around to fixing another issue that's been present since the very first day I bought this car. I'd previously repaired this area when I was fixing the rear deflectors, but on one trip, my child's knee hit the armrest and broke it again. I tried it again as the weather warmed up this year, but I decided to completely upgrade this area. Initially, I wanted to integrate a second, folding shelf and a sliding upper section from a Toyota, but I simply didn't have the time for such a tedious process. So, after the child fell asleep, I spent the evenings tinkering around in the kitchen. So, here's the process. The armrest is fairly easy to disassemble; it's held in place with screws that screw into plastic moldings in the mating part of the cover. This, in turn, causes creaking when pressure is applied, as these moldings are long and flimsy. The top, facing leatherette is held in place with glue. Mine cracked due to a crack in the plastic, so it's in the trash right now; it's no use. Underneath, you can see some kind of foam filler, something similar to mounting foam. To upgrade, I had to clean all this filler off the lid. Next, I knew I'd use fiberglass, but how could I make it stick to the lid and keep it from falling off? I decided to use small screws, screwing them all over the lid, sometimes with the heads facing up, sometimes with the threads facing down, creating a kind of anchor. Well, the rest is simple: I bought some epoxy resin to prevent the odor, since polyester is impossible to work with at home, and began to glue it in layer by layer. After it dried and trimmed off the fringe, I applied putty. First, a "hairy" one, then a hard one, and then a soft one, coated with aluminum powder to seal the pores and minor imperfections. I glued 2mm neoprene on top of the resulting shell. And then, on top of the neoprene, I used leatherette to reupholster the dashboard. The result was so pleasant, it's absolutely amazing. The armrest became moderately soft, and the structure returns to its original shape when pressed. It's practically a premium look =) It looks great in the car, and most importantly, it's intact, doesn't creak, and it's impossible to press it in, as the shell thickness is around 3-5mm, varying depending on its location. And now the stock mounts will definitely not be damaged or broken when pressed on the cover from above.
