Elissa, o Didone, all’uccisione di suo marito da parte del fratello, Pigmalione, che così le usurpò il trono fenicio, scappò da Tiro, e approdò sulle coste libiche, dove ottenne asilo dal re Iarba, il quale le permise di prendere tanto terreno quanto ne poteva contenere la pelle di un bue. Tagliata quest’ultima in strisce sottilissime, riuscì così ad ottenere 22 stadi quadrati di terreno, fondando la città di Cartagine. Qui conobbe e si innamorò dell’eroe troiano Enea, che però dovette lasciarla, costretto dal Fato, per dirigersi nel Lazio, in Italia. Disperata, si suicidò, chiedendo al suo popolo di vendicarla, profetizzando così i futuri scontri tra Cartagine e i Romani, discendenti di Enea… È questo il mito della fondazione di Cartagine, secondo l’Eneide: una città che avrebbe dato filo da torcere alla potente Roma. Andiamo dunque alla scoperta di questa mitica città, e scopriamo cosa resta del suo glorioso passato! Desperate, she committed suicide, asking her people to avenge her, thus prophesying future clashes between Carthage and the Romans, descendants of Aeneas... This is the myth of the foundation of Carthage, according to the Aeneid: a city that would have given a hard time to the powerful Rome.
