The nomenclature of ethers can be done using common names or IUPAC names, each following specific conventions. 1. Common Naming System: In the common system, ethers are named by listing the alkyl or aryl groups attached to the oxygen atom in alphabetical order, followed by the word "ether." 2. IUPAC Naming System: In the IUPAC system, ethers are named as "alkoxy" derivatives of the parent hydrocarbon chain. The smaller alkyl group (R–O) is treated as a substituent, and the longer alkyl chain is used as the parent. Steps: Identify the longest carbon chain attached to the oxygen atom. This forms the base name of the compound (parent hydrocarbon).
