W&OD bike trail, a video tour, (mile 20 to 0), from Herndon to Arlington (Virginia), May 2021

The W&OD Trail — runs 45 miles through northern Virginia. In this video, I bike the 20 miles from downtown Herndon to Arlington, VA, which has the trail markers from mile 20 to mile 0. This bike trail was originally a train line (the Washington and Old Dominion Railroad) which operated from 1859-1968. It was eventually converted to a biking and hiking trail, beginning in 1974. Below I show the time on this video where I encountered some sample mile signs — and other landmarks on the trail. (As I passed the mile posts, I tried to call out which sign I was reaching.) For the Metro, use the end doors of any rail car, not the “center” doors, when traveling with a bicycle. You can use this video and other similar biking videos I made — to bike at home, year round. A specialized stand can turn your bicycle into an exercise bicycle.
