The appeal of period dramas lies in a different approach than the overseas drama "Shogun." While it's said that young people are losing interest in period dramas, besides the massive success of "Shogun," manga and anime works like "The Young Lord Who's Good at Running Away" and "The Tale of the Heike" are still popular with young people, so I think there's still potential for period dramas to become hits.
