Sonic the Hedgehog playthrough (Xbox Series X)

Playthrough with Tails, using the version of the game included on Sonic Origins Plus. Origins Plus is an updated version of Origins, which adds Amy as a playable character, makes Knuckles playable in Sonic CD and adds all the Game Gear Sonic games, among other things. When Sonic Origins was announced, most fans rejoiced, but then SEGA went very quiet about it for a while. This led to rumors that it was in development hell, which seemed to be the case as when it was released it had a lot of bugs. Many of these would be patched out later, although several still remain. The one thing I noticed with this version of Sonic 1 is the special stages: they’re awful! I never liked them than much in the original version but they play even worse here. I don’t know what happened, but your character seems much harder to control in them, and you get bounced around a lot further than you should. Maybe it’s just an Xbox issue but the special stages are basically unplayable to me, I somehow managed to get the red chaos emerald and I gave up on collecting any more after that. Tails is super easy mode. I think this marks the first time he’s officially been playable in Sonic 1, but his flight ability makes an easy game even easier. That annoying shortcut in Labyrinth’s first act? Just fly over it. Robotnik being out of each during the Spring Yard boss? Just fly into him. The widescreen option also lets you see incoming enemies and obstacles earlier, too.
