How to vacuum a pool to waste : cleaning a dirty pool My pool had sat over winter without being cleaned. I needed to open it as the weather was improving but it was very dirty. I live in the Canary Islands and we had the worst Calima on record for more than 10 years. A Calima is a wind which blows from the east and brings dust from the Sahara Desert which it then dumps all over the islands. Why vacuum a pool to waste? Even so, in the 10 minutes it took me to vacuum to waste, the water level dropped by about 6 inches or more. My aim wasn't to clean the pool thoroughly but just to remove the worst of the dirt.
