Pete Edochie and The Parasitic Unity Myth: Exposing the One-Sided Sacrifices in Yorùbáland

Pete Edochie recently released a viral video clip emphasizing unity between the Yorùbá and Ibo peoples. He meticulously listed historical instances where Yorùbá leaders made ultimate sacrifices to shield and elevate Ibos. The narrative highlights Lieutenant Colonel Adekunle Fajuyi choosing to die alongside his guest, Major General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi, during the bloody counter-coup of July 29, 1966. Edochie further praised Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s free education policy, noting that the Western region funded the schooling of non-Westerners, including Ibos, without demanding fees. He capped his speech with post-civil war accounts, describing how Ibos returned to Lagos to find their properties perfectly preserved, refurbished, and handed back alongside accumulated rent. A popular example cited was Dr Alex Ekwueme, who recovered his intact properties through the integrity of Otunba Subomi Balogun. This historical recital sounds remarkably noble, yet it remains completely one-sided. Beyond minor symbolic gestures, such as Nnamdi Azikiwe giving his children Yorùbá names or Ibo traders closing their shops during the burial of Chief Adeniran Ogunsanya, the historical ledger shows zero reciprocal sacrifice. This dynamic clearly represents a parasitic relationship. The Yorùbá nation continuously gives, accommodates, and sacrifices. As long as this unilateral giving flows, certain groups loudly proclaim a beautiful national brotherhood. The very moment the Yorùbá people choose to prioritize their own self-preservation and ancestral interests, these same beneficiaries quickly launch media attacks, labeling their hosts as tribalists and bigots. This behavior pattern is born out of deep structural lack and pure selfishness. True coexistence cannot be engineered through deceptive rhetoric designed to exploit Yorùbá generosity. Fake friendships built on entitlement must end. Let us stop creating fake unity based on what we can get from the Yorùbá people. We are not one. We are entirely distinct nations with fundamentally divergent cultural evolutions. True national stability requires abandoning assumed brotherhood and adopting a realistic collaboration based on a shared unity of purpose.
