The handbrake had been playing up, not releasing fully, and causing the brakes to drag. When I came to inspect them, like a lot of 10 year old calipers that have been living on a vehicle parked outside, they looked like they had been dredged up from the Titanic! A lot of calipers look like this but work perfectly well, unfortunately with these the handbrake mechanism was seizing. It is quite possible to refurbish calipers by stripping them, giving them a good clean and replacing the seals. But this is a lot of work, and a little research shows that new calipers are quite inexpensive for this van. The hardest part of the job seems to be disconnecting the handbrake cable, which was quite a fiddle. As long as there aren’t any issues with seized up fasteners, it is quite an easy job. I was worried about the connection of the flexible hose to the caliper, but with a little heat they came undone without a problem. If you decide to refurbish your calipers the other main cause of misery is broken bleed nipples, I completely avoided this by using new callipers! Once again there is a lot of information online about anything to do with a Transit, but I eventually decided that 115nm was the torque setting for the caliper bolts. You will need to check this for your version of van as there can be differences. The final part of the job was bleeding the air out of the new caliper. I had clamped the hose when removing the old calipers so very little fluid had been lost, so the bleeding was quite easy.
