SNOWY HYDRO 2.0 SNEAK PEEK

Snowy 2.0 is Australia’s largest committed renewable energy and pumped-hydro expansion of the historic Snowy Mountains Scheme. Acting like a giant battery, it links two existing reservoirs (Tantangara and Talbingo) with 27 km of underground tunnels and a massive power station buried 800 metres underground. Tantangara Reservoir acts like a giant water battery, storing wind and solar energy for later when needed, an equivalent of 26 million home batteries. The project is over 70% complete with an estimated cost of $20 billion. To put that in perspective Australia spends between $30 and $40 billion every year importing fuel only to be burnt once, and with today's volatility it's estimated we're spending $50 billion. This is a nation building, multigenerational project and is owned by the Australian people. It supports local businesses and regional jobs and it will transform the Australian grid, providing long duration storage as coal generators close. Full disclosure I was paid a daily fee to visit the site over three days and all accommodation and flights were paid for by Snowy Hydro. However the many hours I spent researching and editing were unpaid.
