Domenico Scarlatti's Sonatas - Composer Insights
Domenico Scarlatti wrote over 550 single-movement sonatas for the harpsichord, making characteristic but innovative use of the instrument. This composer insights lesson explores sonata K208 in A major. Having clarified the Binary structure that typifies Scarlatti’s approach we then explore the singing melodic line that is assigned to the right hand, including the melodic shape, the rhythmic design (including syncopation), and the use of appoggiatura ornamentation. The purpose of the left hand is then investigated, including its purpose in providing a driving pulse, the harmonic content, and some embellishment through suspensions. The resulting style is very different from that of Bach or Handel, who were both born in the same year as Scarlatti, but it remains a Baroque style that is most expressive and individual. ⬇️Download the files https://drive.google.com/file/d/15Shh... 🔴 Subscribe for more videos just like this: / @musicmattersgb 🎵 Become a Music Matters Maestro: / @musicmattersgb 👕 Merch store: / @musicmattersgb 🕘 Timestamps 0:00 - Introduction to Domenico Scarlatti's sonatas 1:29 - Playing the piece 2:40 - Historic context 3:11 - Left hand accompaniment 5:03 - Melodic right hand 12:38 - Conclusion 🎓 Learn Music Online with Music Matters Learn music theory, aural tests, composition, sight reading, orchestration and more!
