I ended up knitting my garment 5 inches wider than anticipated, but when a design has so much easy already, what difference does 5 whole inches really make? ;) I only knit the garment about an inch longer than it should be before splitting for the front and the back and then I modified the short row shaping. Because I didn't want to mattress stitch the front and back, I simply slipped the stitches that the pattern asked to bind off to keep them live for a three needle bind off. Also, because I didn't want to purl my colorwork while working the short row shaping, I instead knit across to the same # of stitches asked to bind off in the beginning of the following purl row. I broke my yarn, and slipped my working stitches back onto my left needle to pick up new yarn for the next row to continue this method. This meant that my short row shaping took only 1 row for every row the pattern asked to knit two rows. I could have cut the number of stitches i slipped at the beginning and end of each row in half, but I didn't want to add to the length of the garment much more than I had given my swatch. I then cast on 64 inches for the arms which allowed for 3 pattern motif repeats plus two extra stitches I decreased a few rows in at the arm pit. This gives a nice looking join if you ask me. My arm holes measure about 11.5 inches wide which I like. It makes the whole garment look less BIG and provides a mild 'fitted' element that was missing for me. I omitted instructions for the sleeves and just continued to knit in the round following the colorwork charts to create a flared sleeve. I wanted to re-invite the open look from the body back into the sleeves instead of tapering them even smaller than the elbow area as the instructions would have for me at this point.
