Trailblazing is a word we use these days to describe people who have laid the path for future generations. But between 1811 and 1840, fur traders and trappers physically and literally laid the path of the famous Oregon Trail. The Oregon Trail was only passable by foot and by horseback, but by 1836 the first wagon train was organized from Independence, Missouri, and reached as far as Willamette Valley in Oregon. The trail covered the states of Missouri, Nebraska, Wyoming, Idaho, and Oregon. But these trails were no hike up a scenic route; it was a trail into the wild unknown for many of these pioneers.
