Support for agricultural sector development continues to strengthen throughout Papua. At the 2026 Papua Regional Agricultural Development Consolidation, regional heads, farmers, heads of agencies, and agricultural extension workers (PPL) from South Papua, Central Papua, Highlands Papua, West Papua, Southwest Papua, and Papua expressed their shared commitment to overseeing and ensuring the success of various government agricultural programs, which are considered to have provided tangible benefits to the community. This consolidation forum serves as a forum for aligning efforts between the central and regional governments to accelerate agricultural development in Papua. Various strategic programs, ranging from rice paddy development, development of superior commodities, to assistance with agricultural facilities and infrastructure, have received widespread support from both local governments and farmers. Several regional heads stated that agricultural programs implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture have had a positive impact on increasing production and community welfare. In Sarmi Regency, for example, 640 hectares of land have been prepared for rice paddy development through a joint agreement with indigenous communities holding customary land rights. Meanwhile, farmers from South Sorong believe that the rice paddy development program has opened up new opportunities for Papuans to increase food self-sufficiency and strengthen their families' economies. Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman emphasized that the government will continue to strengthen agricultural development in Papua through budget support of approximately IDR 5 trillion over the past two years. This budget will be used to develop 80,000 hectares of rice fields in 2025–2026, provide assistance with modern agricultural tools and machinery, build irrigation, and develop various strategic commodities such as rice, corn, coffee, cocoa, nutmeg, sago, sweet potatoes, and cassava. During the meeting, various proposals submitted by regional heads, farmers, and regional stakeholders received direct responses from the Ministry of Agriculture. These proposals covered the need for agricultural machinery, irrigation construction and rehabilitation, and the expansion of rice fields, which are considered crucial to accelerating the transformation of the agricultural sector in Papua. According to Amran, successful agricultural development requires strong collaboration between the central government, regional governments, farmers, extension workers, and all stakeholders.
