With 365 windows for the days of the year, 52 rooms for the weeks, four towers for the seasons, underground marble stables, central heating, hand-cranked lifts, and possibly even a glass-floor aquarium library, it was centuries ahead of its time. But within a single generation, the family line was gone. War, invasion, and looting stripped the estate bare during Sweden’s devastating 1655 invasion of Poland, and later conflicts reduced it to ruins.
