The ancient 'Drowned Forest' that lies beneath Youghal Beach - Co. Cork - Ireland.

Look back in amazement at the 5,000 year old 'Drowned Forest' at Youghal Beach - Co. Cork. Environmentally concious Jess Burke was so taken by seeing the remnants of a 5,000 year old 'Drowned Yew Wood Forest' that lies beneath Youghal Beach it inspired her take her camera out to capture the ancient forest in her own unique way. Some of the close-up images are almost 'Alien' like and Jess said the texture of the grain in the wood and the surrounding sand was just 'Magical' to see. It was great to look back at what was lost in the mists of time. The name Youghal comes from the Irish 'Eochaill' meaning 'Yew Woods', which were once common in the area. Older anglicisations of this name include Youghall, Yoghel and Yochil. Is it possible that these are the remants of the 'drowned forest'. The pounding surf from the stormy seas has washed away the sand and stone that normally hide the remains of the ancient forest that lies beneath Youghal beach that once covered the region over 5,000 years ago. You can see this amazing sight at low tide if you walk a few hundred yards westward beyond Youghal's famous boardwalk. Naturally for safety be very careful and aware of local tidal conditions and the dangers of rising tides and also check the weather conditions when you are any where near the sea.
