Or, to receive proper care instructions, you might need to buy from a trustworthy farm. Why do so many places sell turtles at different prices? The credibility of the seller is equally important, because the turtle you're raising will be with you for a long time. If you receive a healthy, strong turtle and receive proper care instructions, you'll have peace of mind and can happily raise it. There's no hard and fast rule about which turtle is more or less beautiful; it depends on individual preferences. Choose the one you like best or feel a connection with. Here's a quick way to check their external appearance when buying: Legs – Choose a turtle with healthy legs, no wounds or injuries. Observe if they walk normally. Try placing them on the ground and letting them walk. Choosing one that walks well indicates good health. Claws – Choose one with all its claws intact, not broken or missing. If a claw is missing, it can take a long time to regrow, or it may not regrow at all. Sulcata tortoises have five claws on their front feet and four on their hind feet. These claws are crucial for tearing and eating food. Shell – Choose a shell that is well-proportioned, symmetrical, and free from dents, cracks, chips, distortions, or double (double refers to an asymmetrical shell). It should not be bulging (bulging refers to a shell that is excessively raised, often caused by excessive protein intake or rapid growth). Shell shape will vary slightly from one tortoise to another; some may be convex, some flat, and some elongated. Anus – Try to choose an tortoise with a clean anus, free from blockages. Observe the appearance of its droppings. Healthy tortoises will have solid, non-liquid droppings. If the anus is slimy, wet, or watery, avoid it, as this indicates an excessive amount of protozoa and poor health. Eyes – Choose tortoises with bright, healthy eyes. Avoid those with closed eyes, shut eyes, or excessive eye discharge, as these may indicate illness. The eye sockets should also not be deeply sunken. Because that indicates dehydration. Weight – If possible, choose a turtle that is relatively heavy, as this indicates good health. Skin – For the skin, choose one without wounds or scars, and with a smooth, hydrated appearance. Mouth – Choose one with a beak that closes tightly, without chips or cracks.
