How Variable Valve Timing Works

Ever wonder how variable valve timing works and how it improves performance on your car's engine? In this video, I'll be tearing down both types, the continously variable valve timing electric actuator, and the older, oil control timing camshaft phaser to see what's inside and how it works! Variable valve timing is used to change the angle at which the camshaft lobes contact the valves, and therefore what position the valve valves open at relative to top dead center of the piston. There are three main techniques: 1. During low load, the intake valve delays closing. This pushes air back into the intake, effectively making for a smaller combustion chamber, saving fuel. 2. During high speed, delay the closing of the exhaust valve. This provides a scavenging effect, which pushes more intake air into the cylinder. More air, equals more power. 3. During Constant speed, the intake timing is advanced. This allows some exhaust gases to enter the intake plenum and getting reburned, similar to exhaust gas recirculation, therefore reducing emissions. Timing can be advanced or retarded using an electric motor actuator, with a brush and commutator surface, or oil control valves filling passages inside the gear. Both do have disadvantages as you'll see in the video. For more information on why your car may rattle on cold starts due to the Variable Valve Timing Actuator, see this video teardown:    • Here's Why Your Car Rattles on Cold Starts   The engine from this video is a 2.0 turbocharged engine from a 2019 Genesis G70 with a cracked piston.
